Themes
One theme in Sunrise Over Fallujah is the bravery and courage it takes to be a soldier fighting in a combat zone. This theme is developed throughout this novel. Early in the book Birdy does not think he has enough courage and bravery to go to war after seeing how much better Marla and Jonesy are at being soldiers. But with bullets flying past his head and IED's exploding everywhere, Birdy realizes he will need this courage to get out of this war alive. Birdy shows his new found courage when he saves Captain Miller's life at the hospital. I think this is a very important theme in this novel.
Another theme in Sunrise Over Fallujah is that war can change people. The Iraq changes Birdy as a person from the beginning of the novel to the end. The war changes Birdy in many ways. He becomes great friends with people he thought he would never be able to get along with. He also starts to appreciate life more when he sees how fast Jonesy's life was taken away. The war also helps Birdy believe in himself. He thinks that if he can survive fighting in the Iraq war he can do anything he puts his mind to. He becomes more courageous, because if he didn't have that courage he probably wouldn't have survived. This is also a very important theme throughout this novel.

This image represents the theme of courage because of how brave you have to be to keep your cool when there are bullets flying by your head and bombs going off around you.
